Stick to What you Know

“You can see through this stuff sometimes, and you know Al Davis just died, obviously had a great career and did a lot of good things but it seems when people die sometimes, the narrative…you know ‘They’re doing this for Al Davis’ and all that, and in this case, I really doubt the Raiders had that much of a connection with Al Davis” –Bill Simmons, B.S. Report 10/14 with Al Michaels. “He used to come out to practices and say hi,” Boyd said. “I came in as a free agent, so I didn’t think he knew everything about me,…

A Sad Memorial for Philadelphia Sports

It’s been a rough week. I chose not to write during the NLDS, and now, I really regret my decision. I thought I would jinx the Phillies on their path to victory, and although I’m a terribly superstitious person, I probably did the exact opposite. Instead, I blame an infamous squirrel. A damn squirrel?? Games 1 through 4 were exciting, nail-biting, thrilling displays of baseball. We lost Game 5, however, in a dull, boring, anxious, disappointing, uncomfortable defeat. Our bats were silent. Our players looked like they were attending a funeral. It might have been the most anti-climatic ending…

Week 5 Picks, Phillies Misery, and Bromances in the Outsiders

Last night was a swift kick in the nuts (or a Moleman football to the nuts). Me and Stef hadn’t even GOTTEN to the bar yet, we were listening to the Phils game on 1210 and already the Cardinals had scored a run. “Uh-Oh” I said (In so many words). We reached Buffalo Wild Wings, where we had watched the Phils oust the Dodgers back in 09 (or 08…I can’t remember which), and so we thought that it would give us some good juju. Well the place was PACKED and we couldn’t get a table (which I needed after…

Phillies/Cardinals Pre-Game Thread

I’m not great at championship speeches, but I think something needs to be said. It’s Game 5 of the NLDS tonight, and the thought of the Phillies not advancing to the Championship Series has me worried. The Cardinals are hot. They basically had an impeccable September to surpass the Braves in the wildcard, and now they are carrying a heavy momentum into the playoffs. Tied 2-2, our boys will try to fend off the daunting weight that comes with having a huge target on your back. We look vulnerable. It’s easy to say we assembled the “Miami Heat” of…

Random Thoughts: Monday Edition

1.) The first thing I checked this morning was Profootballtalk.com and as I perused Mike Florio’s “10 Pack” I saw this wonderful little nugget about Calvin Johnson: “But there was no denying his potential, even though the Raiders haven’t received nearly the level of criticism they deserve for passing on the guy who already is better than Fred Biletnikoff, Cliff Branch, Tim Brown, and every other standout Raiders wideout combined.” Haha, let’s settle down, jackass.  Megatron has been unbelievable so far but he has a small sample size and I would argue (correctly) that he is not even better…

2011 MLB Playoff Predictions!!!

It is that time of year my friends. October baseball. It’s cold, you’re going to drink a lot, and you’re certainly not going to have a life outside of baseball. 2 years ago, I made a pledge to lose 10 lbs. in the month of October. The Phillies were in the playoffs. Guess how well that worked out? This year, I’m a little older, a little wiser, and I’ve accounted for the time that October baseball will consume. These playoffs stand to be some of the best in recent years. The final day of the regular season was about…

I’m Sick of Hearing About Tony Romo…. Already…

Sometimes, I like to think of a story as a meal. You want to start the readers off with something wonderful to drink, enchant them with some light appetizers, and then make your point with the meat and potatoes. Every once in a while, I’ll end the meal with some sweet desserts. Today…. we’re going to start with steak the cook dropped on the floor in the back. Tony Romo is getting so much praise for a mediocre performance, it’s making my stomach turn. This is the problem with national exposure, I suppose. They need something to discuss and…
